Timing Chain Kits: What Are They?

A timing chain kit has the chain, some sprockets, tensioners and sometimes guides and other elements, all made to keep the crank and cam rotating at the same speed. Because of this synchronization, the valves in the engine operate as intended during each cycle of intake and exhaust. Timing chains are stronger than timing belts and tend to last much longer if maintained well. Still, all those chains will eventually need to be replaced, since normal use may cause them to lose their strength.

Installation Notes

1. Preparation and Component Protection Before Removal

Before removing the timing chain, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent accidental electrical contact.

When removing external engine accessories (such as belts, fans, valve covers), proceed with caution and document the component sequence to avoid confusion during reassembly.

For removed components like sprockets and guides, wrap them in soft cloth or store in dedicated containers to prevent impact damage or contamination. Apply rust inhibitor to the chain itself before sealing it for storage to guard against dust or moisture corrosion.

2. Part Fixation and Cleaning During Installation

When installing a new chain, first inspect all components for integrity. Clean the installation surfaces (e.g., sprocket teeth, guide rail surfaces) and pre-lubricate the chain to minimize initial wear.‌

Use specialized tools (e.g., timing chain locators) to secure the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring alignment of timing marks (e.g., crankshaft pulley with cylinder block markings, camshaft sprocket with bearing cap markings).‌

Handle the chain gently during installation to prevent twisting or misalignment; colored chain links must precisely match sprocket markings.‌

Key steps include: first install the tensioner arm and guide rail, tighten bolts, then remove the tensioner locating pin and adjust tension, finally reinstalling components like the oil pump.‌
