What is VVT cam phasers?

VVT cam phasers are hydraulic sprockets on the camshaft, managed by the ECU to alter valve timing for optimized fuel efficiency, torque, and emissions. They use pressurized oil via VVT solenoids to rotate the cam relative to the crankshaft, with failure leading to engine rattles, poor performance, and check engine lights, frequently affecting engines over time.

Key Functions

Adjusts camshaft timing in real time based on engine operating conditions (such as speed, load and temperature);

Controls valve overlap, reducing it at low speeds to stabilise idling and increasing it at high speeds to improve air-intake efficiency;

Enhances torque output, reduces fuel consumption and lowers exhaust emissions.

Brief Description of the Operating Principle

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) receives signals from the crankshaft/camshaft position sensors, throttle position, coolant temperature and other sources;

01

The ECU consults the pre-set MAP table to calculate the target valve timing required for the current operating conditions;

02

The ECU sends a PWM control signal to the OCV valve (oil control valve);

03

The OCV regulates the flow of high-pressure oil, driving the rotor and stator inside the cam phaser to rotate relative to one another;

04

The rotor is rigidly connected to the camshaft, thereby altering the camshaft phase and completing the valve timing adjustment.

Main Components

Cam Phaser: A hydraulic actuator, typically of a vane-type design, containing a forward chamber and a reverse chamber;

OCV Valve (Oil Control Valve): A three-position, four-way solenoid valve that controls the direction and flow rate of the oil circuit;

Sensor Assembly: Includes the camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor and others, forming a closed-loop control system.

 Common Types and Representative Technologies

VVT-i‌ (Toyota): Adjusts intake valve timing only;

Double VANOS‌ (BMW): Adjusts both intake and exhaust valve timing;

VTEC‌ (Honda): Combines valve lift and timing adjustment;

MultiAir‌ (Fiat): Electro-hydraulic control of valve timing and lift;

CVVT‌ (Hyundai, Kia, etc.): Continuously variable valve timing.
