WHAT IS A Transfer Case Chain

A transfer case chain is a drive chain fitted inside a vehicle’s transfer case. Its main functions include:

Transmitting power from the gearbox to the front and rear drive shafts;

Switching power distribution between two-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) modes;

In some transfer cases, this chain also works in conjunction with a gear set to switch between high and low range.

This chain is typically made of high-strength alloy steel and possesses tensile strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance to meet the high torque demands of harsh operating conditions such as off-road, muddy and snowy terrain.

Key characteristics of the transfer case chain

Function

Transmits power to the front drive shaft and rear axle; in full-time four-wheel-drive systems, it typically operates continuously.

01

Signs of failure

Clicking, clacking or thumping noises from inside the transfer case; a jerking sensation when turning at low speeds; or the four-wheel-drive system failing to engage.

02

Material

Typically made from high-quality alloy steel, utilising precision-formed, hardened steel plates to ensure durability.

03

Common Applications

Widely used in modern pick-up trucks, jeeps and SUVs (e.g. NV231, NV246, NP261), offering the advantages of being lighter and quieter compared to older, bulky gear-driven transfer cases.

04

Maintenance

When replacing, be sure to check the wear on the chain guides and replace them promptly, whilst also changing the transmission fluid. For detailed instructions, please refer to CarParts.com.

Common Applications‌

Off-road vehicles‌

such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Mitsubishi Pajero, Jeep Wrangler, etc.

‌SUVs and pick-up trucks‌

vehicles equipped with part-time or full-time four-wheel drive systems.

Maintenance and modification‌

when the chain becomes worn or stretched, it can cause abnormal noises, slippage or failure of the four-wheel drive system, requiring replacement with an original equipment or reinforced chain.

‌Explanation of Related Terms‌

‌Transfer Case‌

The core component of the four-wheel drive system, located behind the gearbox, responsible for power distribution ‌

Transfer Case Chain ≠ Timing Chain‌

The latter is used in the engine timing system, whilst the transfer case chain belongs to the drivetrain; the two have completely different functions and locations

FAQ

Are your engine parts new?

Yes. Our parts are guaranteed to be brand new, zero-mile, unused, and crate engine parts.

How can chain life be extended after replacement?

Firstly, the selection and replacement of engine oil is of paramount importance. Secondly, regular inspection of the chain's wear level and the condition of the tensioner is essential.

What should be noted during the running-in period after replacing the timing chain?

It is recommended to avoid aggressive driving during the first 500 kilometres and monitor for unusual noises or oil leaks.

What certifications have your products obtained?

The product has obtained ISO quality certification.Certification:GB/T19001-2016 idtlSO9001:2015.

Is it necessary to replace other associated components during installation?

It is advisable to synchronously inspect or replace the water pump, oil pump, seals, etc., to avoid secondary disassembly and reassembly.

Does the tensioner need to be activated? When?

Yes, after installation. The tensioner piston must be compressed completely and then released after installation against the chain. Failure to properly activate the tensioner can cause timing system failure.

Can individual components be purchased separately? For instance, can one replace just the chain without replacing the tensioner?

It is advisable to replace the entire set, as mismatched wear between new and old parts may lead to malfunctions.

Reliability, quiet operation, high speed and lightweight construction are the fundamental requirements for four-wheel-drive transfer case chains. Worldwide, only a handful of chain manufacturers are capable of supplying such chains.

Hongli offers a range of transfer case chains that combine high torque capacity, long centre distances, high speed and lightweight construction.

The transfer case chain is manufactured from high-quality alloy steel. The chain plates are formed using precision extrusion and isothermal quenching processes, resulting in high hardness, high strength and high impact toughness. The pins undergo a super-hardening treatment, providing excellent wear resistance. Based on meshing theory calculations and repeated validation, the formed chain plate teeth achieve perfect meshing with the sprockets. This ensures not only robust reliability and suitability for long-term high-speed operation, but also outstanding performance in terms of lightweight construction and low noise levels.
