What is Engine Water Pump?
The car engine water pump is a key component of the engine cooling system, responsible for circulating coolant between the engine and the radiator to maintain the engine’s normal operating temperature.

Basic Structure and Operating Principle
Components
Water pump housing
Impeller (core component)
Water pump shaft and bearings (usually shaft-mounted bearings)
Coupling flange or pulley
Water seal assembly (to prevent coolant leakage)
Drain hole (located between the water seal and the bearing, used for early leakage warning)
Principle of Operation
The engine crankshaft drives the water pump pulley via a V-belt, causing the impeller to rotate.
Under the action of centrifugal force, the impeller draws coolant in from the centre and flings it towards the edge of the housing, creating a pressure differential that keeps the coolant circulating continuously.
Coolant flows from the engine block’s water passages, enters the water pump via the upper inlet, and is then pumped into the radiator for cooling, completing themajor circuit; when the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed, allowing only theminor circuit to operate.

Common Faults and Maintenance Tips
Water seal failure: A continuous leak of coolant from the drain hole indicates that the water seal has failed.
Bearing wear: Unusual noises or a grinding sensation when the water pump is running.
Loose or broken timing chain: This causes the water pump to stop running, leading to engine overheating.
We recommend regularly checking for coolant leaks around the water pump and inspecting the condition of the water pump whenever the timing chain is replaced.
Signs of a Failing Water Pump
Engine Overheating: The most common sign, indicating poor circulation.
Coolant Leaks: Often appearing in the front center of the car, often caused by failed seals or gaskets.
Squealing or Grinding Noise: A high-pitched, rhythmic noise that changes with engine speed, typically caused by a failing bearing.
Rust and Corrosion: Internal debris can build up, hindering performance.
