You might be worried that the timing chain in your engine is loose, and this caution is perfectly understandable-after all, a problem with the chain could cause the engine to "break down." Don't panic; checking its elongation is actually a straightforward process.

The most accurate way to check timing chain elongation is to use a spring scale to apply a standard tension (usually 50N) at multiple locations and measure the chain length under tension. If it exceeds the manufacturer's specified limit, it must be replaced.

Standard Testing Method (Applicable to most vehicle models)

Removing the Engine Cover and Timing Chain Cover: First, remove the upper engine cover and timing chain cover to expose the chain itself, ensuring direct contact with the chain for measurement.

Measuring Elongation with a Spring Scale

Connect the spring scale to the chain and apply a tension of 50N (approximately 5 kgf) to tighten the chain.

Take measurements at three or more different locations on the chain, and take the average for greater accuracy.

Measure the total length of a specified number of links, such as 15 or 16 links, depending on your vehicle's repair manual.
