Timing chains transmit power through metal-to-metal meshing, unlike the friction drive of belts, resulting in higher transmission accuracy and stability. Their fully enclosed lubrication design not only extends service life but also ensures reliable operation at high speeds.
Compared to timing belts, the main advantages of timing chains include:
• Longer lifespan: Most can last as long as the engine, eliminating the need for regular replacements;
• Higher safety: Even if the tensioner malfunctions, it usually issues an early warning noise, preventing sudden breakage and severe engine damage;
• Low maintenance costs: Essentially maintenance-free, with only a recommended tensioner check every 100,000 kilometers.
However, some drawbacks exist, such as higher manufacturing costs and relatively higher operating noise (although modern silent chains have significantly improved this).
